Second edition of a provincial survey on parenting attitudes and behaviours with regard to disciplining children, La violence familiale dans la vie des enfants du
Québec, 2004 (survey of family violence in the life of children) presents the situation together with the trends observed over five years. The annual prevalence of non-violent discipline, psychological aggression, minor physical violence, and severe physical violence
toward children between 0 and 17 years of age is estimated using a series of items comprising the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics
Scales. What is more, the factors associated with these violent behaviours are examined, i.e. the age and sex of the children, the socioeconomic characteristics of the parents,
their attitudes on corporal punishment, their childhood discipline experiences, and the presence of conjugal violence. The fathers and mothers are compared in regard to their attitudes and the factors associated with the violent behaviour they report. This data, representative of children in Ωuébec, was taken from telephone interviews carried out for independent samplings,
i.e. 3,148 mothers and 953 fathers interviewed regarding a child living with them or of which they have custody for at least one half of the time. The results are discussed in light of the current state of knowledge regarding this problem and intervention strategies are suggested. This report is an invaluable source of information for anybody interested in this public health problem.
